NEW LOOK WANTED LISTS

With a big thanks to Gamebase64, we have used the GB64 database to produce lists of previews/lost and unpublished titles to flag up, most of which we haven't had chance yet to get full entries sorted for. A segment may not be GTW's at all, but we felt it was worth flagging up anyway to be safe. Take a look and see if you can help us solve some mysteries!

Wanted / Missing games

DWARFS AND DIAMONDS ADDED

A new entry has been added for the Bubble Bobble/Bombjack clone: Dwarfs and Diamonds. A neat little preview, but what happened to the final game?...

MISSING MAIN SITE + FORUM

As you may have noticed, the main GTW site, Forum, PCGTW and GTW3DO have been offline (Even GTW64 was temporarily offline).

There are unfortunately still hosting issues going on, with at present only the main GTW site looking like it will be back soon. We are currently re-building an improved portal site which should be online soon. We hope to have recovered most of the content by the time this comes back online. More news here as it comes.

GTW is proud to present yet another long lost Codemasters game for the C64, the incomplete and unreleased Deathstalker (Partially converted from the Spectrum), and another title called Drax by the same author:

Deathstalker, Drax - Evilblood

OH AND BTW...!

We can announce that GTW has recovered Ocean's long lost Streethawk game. But, before you get excited - we have hit a snag. Although we have recovered what we believe to be the very final version of the game when it got cancelled (90% approx completion), the source file was missing all the graphic attributes. A search is now on to find the missing graphic attributes to then begin a restoration along the lines of The Bubbler. Watch this space!

It's not perfect by any means (The search system at present is antiquated and in dire need of replacing, but hopefully it will make getting round the archive a little better.

At present I cannot replicate this functionality within the entries themselves, this will be possible on the new site though!

Xmas update!

'THE BUBBLER' - RELEASED!...

After a long rescue mission, at long last the lost C64 conversion of The Bubbler has been found and released. The added bonus is that the game is fully complete, containing the loading picture, music and sfx. Developer Matt Young, Sailor/Triad and Jazzcat have been busy at work and reconstructing things into its final state, whilst compressing and bug fixing. The download contains two versions, a trained version and the standard version. All instructions are included.

Although the frame rate suffers due to Ultimate's demands on how the display worked, it is a massive finding and still as playable as the Spectrum original. It's yet another one for the archives! Go check it out!...

THE WILD BUNCH (C64) NOW COMPLETE!

Of what was almost a GTW and after just over a year of development, the C64 conversion of the excellent Amstrad/Spectrum Firebird game "The Wild Bunch" is now complete.

Wild Bunch screenshot

The Wild Bunch was a superb classic Firebird release which never strangely had a C64 conversion back in the day. Jon Wells has risen to the challenge some 25 years on, bringing along a series of additional features/updates, including new improved graphics, sound, gameplay features (Including a vastly improved Gunfight scene with speech).

The game is being sold in a limited edition form with authentically and professionally produced inlays and tape labels, replicating the Firebird original release of old, all for the budget price of £3.99 (Not including p&p).

The official release date is due sometime later this month, which will be a date set in October (TBC). The game will now be shipped with the bonus of two versions of the cover printed on both sides. So you can choose which version you wish to display on your shelf. Previews of the cover can be seen on the project website.

There is currently still a pre-order competition running for the game where 20 people can win a free professionally produced Wild Bunch audio CD. The competition will close by Midnight on Friday the 11th September, and the winners will be announced on the website by the 18th September.

'THE BUBBLER' - ON IT'S WAY!...

A bit of a surprise we hope, but coming up soon will be the complete conversion of "The Bubbler" on the C64, the conversion of Ultimate's infamous last Speccy game. Check out the ingame shot below...

Bubbler shot

In the recovery of the game there have been one or two surprises, but the biggest has to be the fact that the game was finished. It seems the only thing which stopped this one was the slow framerate, which is a shame.

Anyway... things are progressing well and we should be seeing it very soon! (But there is more to come ... something with a bit of an "Ocean" theme to it.. a disk is in the post as we speak ;-) )

SUB HUNTER RELEASED!...

Ok, not quite GTW related but after 4 years of hard work our C64 game Sub Hunter has been finished and released. It is now on sale from Psytronik Software on tape (With disk version coming soon).  This is by GTW webmaster 'Frank Gasking' on the pixels and design, and C64 developer 'Richard Bayliss' on code/sfx and Maniacs of Noise on Music.

The loading screen - pixelled by Frank

The game will only be available exclusively from Psytronik Software for the first month or so, but then there will be an alternative free download for people to play after that.

It's been a bit of a slog in our free time to get it sorted, but we're glad its done and now don't want to see the game for quite some time if we can help it!

Level 1 of Sub Hunter

For now, if you would like to have a go of the game, grab yourself a suitable C64 emulator and grab the 4 level demo.

SUBMIT A REVIEW, EXPAND THE ARCHIVE!...

GTW64 is now accepting submitted GTW entry reviews, which could be on preview's which we have not yet covered which are sat on Gamebase or elsewhere. There is still a good 1000 or so entries out there to process on Gamebase alone, and it might take some time! (And valuable time which could be spent on tracking down full versions, work disks). So we need your help a bit, so if you fancy helping out, please email us :)

EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS ...

A whole batch of design documents have been unearthed recently on some surprise Empire Software games for the C64, pretty much confirmation of existance of some titles which we thought would never have been considered. All of this, and a superb document discovery for Barbarian 3 will be coming soon. Keep 'em peeled!

SITE TWEAKING AND MAINTENANCE

The new GTW64 site is to get started in the next few months, but in the meantime there will be various fixes to pages and styles to prepare everything for smooth transfer to a new design/site structure. You should hopefully not notice anything as this happens.

One thing you may have noticed is the header being tidied up, since the old header was very messy and glitched quite badly on some browsers. A quick and dirty fix it is though for a 5-6 year old template.

THE WILD BUNCH - COMING SOON!

Excellent news for fans of the Spectrum/Amstrad Firebird title! The long lost C64 conversion is going to be finished off as authentically as possible and released in limited form with proper inlays as it would have been had Firebird had released a C64 version back in the day.

This is Jon Well's own conversion which never was, which after GTW started nagging about digging out for GTW, Jon has decided to actually finish it for the world to enjoy. Jon teams up with Jason (Kenz) Mackenzie yet again, with Kenz concentrating on producing all the inlays and labels (and possibly more).

THE COMMODORE 64 BOOK, 1982-199X...

This is well overdue (Sorry Andrew!), but fellow GTW team member, Andrew Fisher, has recently had his book released to the world - 'The Commodore 64 book - 1982-199X', which is a comprehensive guide to some of the best C64 games of all time from that period.

Although it could very easy sound biast, I have just recieved my copy today and it is fantastic! If you love the Commodore 64 and your games, then you will love this book -it's been crafted with a lot of love and care by Andrew and it's a highly recommended read. The presentation is awesome too, and already the book has been recieving very positive reviews.

And Solar Jetman gets a mention too in 1991, which is fantastic news in itself that this awesome conversion finally gets the limelight treatment it sadly lost out on back in the day. Grab a copy from the link below...

Our GTW Wanted list has been updated a heck of a lot (1052 entries!), with missing titles listed from Gamebase and Stadium 64 merged in which we haven't covered yet as entries. THANK YOU AND HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS!...

Well, its been a rollercoaster year, and what with a possible move in the new year, its about to become a taller rollercoster. Findings have been very good for 2005, and the site has continued to grow at a steady rate and i've managed to improve some of the structure to keep it maintainable for the future.

Devious Designs has probably been the biggest finding of the year, and will be something to look forward to for 2006. What else is to come in 2006?... More of the same, but hopefully more findings too. 2005 has brought along 3 new Mirror sites for the PC, CPC and Amiga and hopefully we will have more systems covered next year. With the C64 side ever increasing, it is becoming a great advert for a workable project which can uncover lost code for almost any system out there... GTW mirrors for Vic 20, NES, Spectrum, Megadrive, Snes etc anyone?...

We will continue to keep plugging away and find what we can, but we still need your help!... Help has been a crucial part of our work, and this year has seen the biggest influx of information and developers coming forward, and has helped us even find or put us close to finding some big titles.. A big thank you to you all, and especially the regular's who have been sifting through magazines and passing on scans. All there is say is that we hope you have a fantastic Christmas and an even better new year!... Here's to 2006, and may we find many more lost games!...

5 GTW ENTRIES UPDATED...

More information from our files, added to various games already in the GTW archive to back up the information a little bit more...
Arsenal / Argonatica / Bodega / Brides of Dracula / Escape While You Can

MORE TO COME?...

Although this update has been building up, there has been a bit of a delay due to various goings on in real life. The next big thing to happen is a complete house move, which "touch wood" is imminant. In the meantime I hope to be doing a few games a night from our files to add to the site. So you may see one or two games added fairly frequently as I attempt to clear the backlog once more. See you all soon!.

AMIGA GAMES THAT WEREN'T LAUNCHED!...

After many years of discussion, and a change of hands, Amiga GTW has finally been launched into the world thanks to Adrian Simpson, who is better known as one of the main team for Hall Of Light database of Amiga games.

The site has been described by Adrian as basic to start, but the work begins here and the site will grow from these beginnings. Already, they begin by releasing a GTW which has never been released until now. A fantastic start, and a sign of what to come. The Amiga, like the C64, has a large library of titles yet to be found, such as Putty Squad and even Solar Jetman. Now this project has launched, it is hopeful that many titles will now be researched and uncovered as digging begins.

Check it out and if you can help by searching, showing your support and giving encouragement, this project will no doubt bear fruit!

RETRO SURVIVAL PRE-ORDERS BEING TAKEN...

Just to announce something that i've done a feature for, and something really worth checking out if you were a reader of Retro Gamer...

What is Retro Survival? It's a CD-based magazine featuring articles from the never-released issue 19 of Retro Gamer. The freelance writers from RG have got together to produce this CD, and added new content.

What is on the CD? A great collection of retro gaming articles on all sorts of subjects - an in-depth look at the Vectrex by Mayhem, missing pages from the Def Tribute to ZZAP! 64 that RG published, an interview with Leisure Suit Larry creator Al Lowe, Games That Weren't, Back to the 80's, spoof ads... Many of the regular features are present, along with added video and audio content, plus a great competition.

When is it available? Launch is planned for the 5th November, so the sooner you pre-order the sooner after that date you will get your copy.

How much is it? Cover price is £5 plus P&P

How do I pay for it? Pre-orders can be paid for via NoChex, credit/debit card and PayPal. Cheques will be accepted after the launch date.

Where do I find out more? Visit the website at

'OUTRUN EUROPE' VIDEOS AND SCREENS!...

Thanks to Mr Fox, The Overkiller and Joerg Droege, GTW brings you possibly the first ever look at Outrun Europe, also known as Outrun Europa V1. This was actually developed before Turbo Outrun, but was cancelled as Sega released the Turbo Outrun arcade and US Gold decided to convert that first. Read the full story, and checkout the all new screenshots and video downloads added!... Outrun Europe (Europa V1)

'SUB HUNTER' PREVIEW RELEASED...

Not a GTW, but a live game project which is being worked on by myself and Richard Bayliss. This is a conversion of the the classic Vic 20 game, Sub Hunt, and will feature various enhancements and a variety of gameplay styles throughout. This 1 level preview has you having to save 5 swimmers and getting to the surface before your oxygen runs out. Many tweaks needed, but the beginnings of hopefully a nice little game... Sub Hunter Preview

HEADER REWORK...

After a lot of huffing and puffing, i've moved all the pages over to .php based pages and have got rid of the frames . The Header is not included in each page, and now people with lower resolutions will be able to view pages without the navigation taking up all the room. It's early stages, and no doubt there will be a few bugs. Please bear with us, but everything is gradually working again. If you have any links to .htm pages within GTW, please update your links!

FULL 'STARSAT' GAME FOUND!...

Thanks to Scott Julian, GTW is proud to present another lost game which has now
been found. Starsat is an Australian RPG/Arcade Adventure game which was
denied publishing by a popular Australian company for reasons still unknown.
Compared to most games released back in the 80's, this is not a bad game at all
and hopefully one you can at last enjoy...

TWO BIG 'CORE' TITLES REVEALED...

It has come to light about two big C64 titles which are confirmed as in existance
by the developers who later went on to form Core Design and produce many classics. Terry Lloyd and Chris Shrigley shed light on two big titles, including "Task 2",  a game which Bulldog took over as a release. And even more incredible... "Axel's Magic Hammer", reported to be actually completed and fully produced on our beloved C64.  Check out the reviews below to read more....
Axel's Magic Hammer / Task 2

'ZONE OF DARKNESS' - CHAR DEMO RELEASED...

Never seen before, GTW has been given permission to add the Character demo for Zone Of Darkness. The Flashback style main character which is fully controllable on a test backdrop. More to come soon, including all the level graphics which were created and hopefully something more playable. The story begins to unfold on this excellent looking GTW....
Zone Of Darkness

'OP THUNDERBOLT V1' -  PARTIALLY SOLVED......

At last, the mystery behind the rather bizzare Operation Thunderbolt V1 is solved. Brian Flanagan tells all, and why Zzap 64 gave the game such a high rating when it was incomplete and never played.  More light is shed on Trevor Brown, and extra details given on the actual first version's development...
Operation Thunderbolt V1

'ZAMZARA V1' ADDED AND DISCUSSED...

'GODFLESH' REMAINS FULLY RELEASED...

GTW brings you the full exclusive remains of Godflesh - a IK/Mortal Kombat planned game,  consisting of all the music, scans and graphics which were produced for the game.  Although nothing is sadly playable due to how far it got, it is a small indication that a rather nice looking game was taking shape... Even if it was just the graphics...  This therefore is another case closed...
Godflesh

NEW LOOK A-Z + SEARCH ADDED...

As GTW has now hit way past the 600 odd mark in terms of entries, it was about time we organised the site in a better way.  With a severe lack of time to implement a database solution, a temporary php solution has been developed to improve navigation, and with this a new search engine has been built to filter out specific games.   It is by no means a perfect solution, but hopefully you'll agree it is much better this way now.  If there are problems, of course, contact us...  And as an added bonus, you can now pick a game at random using the Random link underneath the GOTM.  Enjoy... and proper update coming soon!

'DEVIOUS DESIGNS' HAS BEEN SAVED!...

One of the biggest GTW findings since Solar Jetman has been recovered at last for the Commodore 64, with Pete Baron recovering his unreleased/incomplete puzzler for Imageworks.  Devious Designs is a fantastic puzzle game which features a book of moves which are very impressive to say the least.  And with the two big developers of Myth and Salamander, Pete Baron and Bob Stevenson, behind the game... you can see the quality shine throughout.  We have NOT put the game up just yet, as there is unfortunately a bug preventing the game to be played beyond the 4th level.... read more below....

At the moment the game is being fixed up, and we believe there to be at least 12 levels, and at most about 30 approximately.  The Amiga version had about 50 levels, with 20 bitmap screens cycled with different puzzles.  Pete Baron is currently digging out more remains of the game on PC disk to see if anymore can be salvaged and to help produce a much fuller release.  The game is fully playable, and features a lot more moves which were later taken out of the Amiga version reluctantly.  We believe there could be as many as 12 bitmap's done by Bob Stevenson in the game.  We are hoping to find more of the title screen and possibly an ending from Pete's PC disks.  There is a partial title screen in place.  There is no music, but some sfx which may have been temporary.

So although we just announce the game for now, we have put up a few screenshots of the first two levels.. and have added a special video download of the first level being played through (4mb approx).  We'll keep you updated, but at last this long lost game has been found!....
Devious Designs

AND A FULL GTW FOUND TOO!... (23/9/05)

More GTW titles, as yet another game has been found.  This time a full game from Australia which was rejected due to a disagreement with the company.  The game seems to be a RPG style game with a hint of Spindizzy about it.  This will be coming up shortly in the next update with any luck with the full story about the game and how it was found....

Inspector Gadget V1

LOADS OF SCANNED SHOTS ADDED......

Missing screenshots have been scanned in for Batman Returns along with some sprites and animations, Fuzzball and Street Fighter 2 V1, which suggests that Batman may have had 4 levels complete and not 3... Fuzzball has two newly added screenshots we missed and which were not in the released preview.. And we give a glimpse and show people that Street Fighter 2 V1 was looking a lot better than the tripe we eventually had...

A SURPRISE COMING UP...

Our next quick update will be focusing on the biggest release for GTW since Tyger Tyger which will be coming soon. Unfortunately there is a bug which is preventing all the levels to be played properly, so this is to be fixed first before a proper release is made. We will however be announcing the game in about a few days, including screenshots and a small video clip to show the game. There are also 3 other GTW titles which are close to being found, including a particular cartoon character game (not quite Daffy Duck! yet..) which has been discovered in its full form. More soon!

A BIG THANK YOU!...

Certain people have been massive influences on this update, none other than Wayne Billingham who has been a huge star in solving a fair few BIG GTW mysteries all at once and promising so much in the near future with regards to finding bits and pieces of some of the titles. Also, a guy called Matt has been very helpful in tracking down a large number of ex-C64 developers for us this week, which may even lead to Murder being found... That guy deserves a pack of cookies!... :-).... Also LeeT has been helping out a lot with regards to Murder, and also in the past with the search for programmers etc. Marco Das for his fantastic contribution of scans and information. Oh and Mark Wilson for digging out Shylock for the first time!... A big thank you to you all!
