Games That Weren't 64

Thanks to Patrick Furlong for mentioning this one, but it seems that according to one of the Amstrad magazines (Amstrad Computer User), the game Beyond the Ice Palace was actually intended to be the original Thundercats game for Elite.

Now something seems to ring true about this, as i'm sure I recall seeing an early shot of the game with a rather red headed main character. The character in Beyond Ice Palace looks a lot like the main Thundercats character with blond hair. Now how come Elite got Gargoyle Games in to redo things like with Scooby Doo?

It is possible that Thundercats V1 was taking far too long to develop and to meet a particular deadline (Christmas?) Elite got in Gargoyle Games to knock something out quick and then keep the original Thundercats game and release under a different name.

Now it is time to do some research, but does anyone know of any news items or even screenshots of the early version of this game?... Do you have more information?.... Off to ask Steve Wilcox I guess!

For now, Patrick got this back from Dave Perry when he asked about if Beyond was meant to be a Thundercats licenced game:

"Wow, that's a good question. To be honest I just can't remember all the stuff that happened with Elite. I was making Ikari Warriors for them, but David Shea had done a version and mine never got formally released, but don't remember making Thundercats. Beyond the Ice Palace was my first attempt at running a project on multiple formats, with multiple programmers. "
